MEASLES INIATAIVE

Simple Solutions for a Killer Disease

In 2001, when the Measles Initiative began, 43 million cases of measles occurred annually, killing hundreds of thousands of children in Africa and Asia each year.

Did you know, that we can help save the lives of many of these children, with vaccinations which costs less than $1 per child?

The American Red Cross has been working with the United Nations, the Center of Disease Control, UNICEF and the World Health Organization since 2001 to save children’s lives in Africa and Asia. The goal is not only to save children’s lives, but to eradicate this disease completely. We can do this with your help.

Red Cross Youth programs throughout the United States, including our Chapter here in Wayne County, is doing our part to help this cause. This is one of the main projects our Youth Group has signed on to assist.

· Globally, measles deaths dropped 68%, from 757,000 in 2000 to 242,000 in 2006.

· In Africa, measles deaths fell 91% during that same period, from nearly 400,00 to 36,000.

The program does much more than just vaccinations to these children. Call the Red Cross to find out more about the Measles Initiative or visit our national website at www.redcross.org.
