Wayne County in Recap In Fiscal Year 2006/2007, the Wayne County Chapter celebrated its 90th year of service to the residents in our community. Dwight Douce, was elected to his second term as Chapter Chairman at the Volunteer Recognition in August, as nearly 250 volunteers attended the annual event. The Chapter continued to stress, quality services delivered throughout the community, as it’s paramount goal. The Chapter kicked off its Capital Campaign and finally broke ground on our building project in April. Led by honorary Chairmen Jenni Smucker and Richard Seaman, and Campaign Chairs Dwight Douce and Tim Tegtmeier, the Leadership Committee set out to raise $1.6 million dollars. Construction is scheduled to be completed in December 2007. Campbell Construction will be the contractor, with BCMC, Inc. as construction manager. Julie Sipka is the architect.
During fiscal year 2006/2007, the Chapter sponsored 318 bloodmobiles throughout Wayne County, netting 11,756 productive donors in the process. This averages nearly 11% of the population, compared to the national average of 3-4%, which has been the trend over recent years. The Chapter hosted it’s forth Cleveland Browns Blood Drive in July with help from the Wooster Area Browns Backers Club. Over 100 people sported the drive. The Chapter again received an award as the top collecting Red Cross facility in northern Ohio – an award the Chapter has received multiple times over the past few years. Despite several "blood emergencies" called by the Regional Office in Cleveland, Wayne County donors responded by donating blood having the potential of saving the lives of well over 36,000 patients in local and area hospitals.

The Chapter certified 75 instructors and added them to the ranks and taught 604 classes. 276 children learned to swim through our summer Learn to Swim program and 55 lifeguards were certified to work at pools throughout Wayne County. As a continuing service to the community 447 people attended safety demonstrations or were assisted through our first aid stations at the Wayne County Fair, Orrville 4th of July celebration, OSU/ATI Bio Ohio fair, the United Way 10k Race, and other community events. 741 youth participated in Red Cross programs throughout the year. Moments after New Years Eve, the Disaster Action Team responded to a house fire in Orrville. In June 2007, Wooster was again crippled by an electrical power outage storm that affected most of northeast Ohio. This storm was the fifth consecutive year in which a major storm has hit our community. The Red Cross opened a Disaster Shelter at the Wayne County Career in Smithville, offering safe haven for 83 families at Spruce Tree Trailer park who were affected by the storm.
Many homes in northern Wayne County were without power for several days. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured. Throughout the entire year, the Chapter assisted 83 families (221 individuals–including 79 children) with direct emergency assistance. The Chapter added 5 new Disaster volunteers and Chapter volunteers assisted on several national disasters – including flooding which affected northern Ohio. Forty-one Disaster Volunteers are registered in the DSHR system, and certified to serve on national disaster assignments.
