The American Red Cross

After years of planning and designing, the American Red Cross has reached the end of a long road in securing a permanent home for the American Red Cross here in Wayne County. The new facility is in downtown Wooster, and located on the corner of Grant and South Streets. The Grand Opening and Public Open House was held on Saturday, April 19th. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at 3:45 pm. The new facility allows us to operate more efficiently and affectively in conducting multiple courses, meetings, blood drives and the day to day operations of the Chapter. This is an exciting time for our volunteers and staff! We have had terrific support from many Wayne County Community leaders. Honorary Chairpersons for this project are Richard Seamen of the Seamen Corporation and Jenny Smucker from the JM Smucker Corporation. Dwight Douce and Tim Tegtmeier are Campaign Co-Chairmen.

PLEASE SUPPORT THE

UNITED WAY CAMPAIGNS

The American Red Cross is a member agency of the Wayne / Holmes United Way and the Orrville Area United Way Agencies. Approximately 21% of our operating budget comes from these funding groups.

It is important to support these campaigns, to help yourself and everyone in Wayne County. You never know how close you or your family could be to use a service supported by one of the United Way Agencies.

Do you use day care? Do you know somebody in the Military? Do your kids take swim lessons? Are you trying to return to the job market? Have you ever performed first aid or CPR on someone? Have you ever been close to being homeless? Do you know someone who has had a heart attack? Has anyone you know ever needed blood? Do you know a Boy or Girl Scout? Do you belong to the "Y"?

The Agencies the United Way supports touches each of our lives - every day. Where would we be without any of the agencies supported by the United Way? A small donation can go a long way, as all of the agencies value each and every dollar we receive.

Help yourself and your neighbor - Support the United Way!

Please Help us Help those affected by Disaster.

There are many ways people can help. Financial contributions are the best way to get the immediate assistance to those who need it most. We can target their needs which include food, clothing, shelter, and medicines. It also helps the local economy of the affected area by putting money back into the area. In-kind donations, while very much appreciated, pose problems in sorting, transporting and delivering to the area. Many churches are collecting items, which we suggest would be more appropriate to send to. They will get these items to various areas for distribution. Donating your time. We are training local people to respond nationally and for here in Wayne County, if needed. Remembering to donate blood on your regular schedule. Although a blood emergency may not have been declared, blood is always needed to save lives. Your continued support of the Red Cross will be important as we address the long term needs of those involved in disasters.

The Be Red Cross Ready initiative encourages three actions every organization, individual and family should take to better prepare themselves for an emergency or disaster:

Make a plan. Encourage members of your community to design a Family Disaster Plan. The Family Disaster Plan focuses on both families and individuals.

Build a Kit. Encourage households to assemble a Disaster Supply Kit, which contains items that people may need if (1) confined to their homes for an extended period (e.g. after a disaster or winter storm) or (2) told to evacuate on short notice. First Aid kits can be purchased at the local Red Cross Chapter.

Be Informed. Encourage the public to give their time through volunteering.

For further information on the Be Red Cross Ready initiative, visit our National Web site at: www.redcross.org
